Positive responses to your little one’s communication encourages more communication. You can help your child feel proud and happy when they initiate communication with you in whatever way they are able to. Here are some ideas:

  • Model language for baby by talking to her and ask her questions about what she is experiencing. Listening when baby is initiating communication is also very important. When baby is done verbalizing or communicating in whatever way she is able to (smiles, coos, babbling, gestures), follow with positive feedback to celebrate communication attempts.
  • Label the word/phrase/emotion you think she might trying to communicate and acknowledge with something like:
    • –  “Wow!,”
    • –  “nice talking”
    • –  “you told me___”
    • –  Clap for her excitedly
    • –  Even before she can babble, you could saythings like: “I love how you’re smiling at me!”or “you look happy!”
    • –  Or you might simply say, “that’s interesting!”
